Hahnemhle, A Paper-maker, Explores The World And Art Of Lettering Alongside Mia Warner

Tell us about yourself.

I love dogs and letters. I moved from the countryside of Gloucestershire to Brighton to study graphic designing. I became obsessed with typography, and I decided to work with my hands. I then moved to London to pursue that career.

What is hand-lettering? What is hand lettering?

Hand lettering involves drawing letters and making arrangements using your hands. There are some similarities with typography and calligraphy, but there is more freedom in style and construction.

Typography uses fonts and typefaces. Graphic designers use type designers to create letters in the same style so that they fit together in one alphabet. Because of the tools used, calligraphy follows certain rules. The thick and thin calligraphy forms are used in hand lettering. Some styles can be inspired from existing typefaces. However, the fact that it is done with pencils, pens and chalk gives you a lot of freedom. It’s so much fun to play around with different arrangements.

What would you describe as your work style?

I don’t have a style. Hand lettering, calligraphy, and signwriting are my main methods of expression. No two projects are ever the same. My style changes often. I am currently drawn to long flowing calligraphic words and big loopy flourishes.

From where do you draw your inspiration and influences?

Instagram is my favorite. It’s an amazing source of inspiration. Some of the most talented lettering artists are Jessica Hische, Alison Carmichael and Tyrsa McDevitt. Ken Barber is at House Industries.

What do you think of hand lettering’s performance in the art world today? Are you seeing it grow in popularity?

Definitely. Hand-drawn letterforms are seeing a huge revival as people realize the value of having something made by humans. Although designers can create amazing things with vinyls and computers, there is something about hand-drawn lettering that you simply cannot get anywhere else.

Which projects are you working on?

I am just beginning to teach, which is very exciting. In the near future, I plan to offer some lettering workshops. There are so many people interested that I would love to give back.

Bright colours are possible with the brilliant white paper. Monochrome and multicoloured motifs can easily be scanned and processed digitally. The pads are ideal for use with fine-tip pens, felt-tip pen pens, and brush pens. The paper is 170gsm in weight and comes with 25 sheets bound at its top.
